Biography

Sagar Morankar is a Dhrupad virtuoso and has been under the tutelage of Pandit Uday Bhawalkar in the Guru—Shishya parampara since 1998. Born in Chalisgaon, Maharashtra, he completed his schooling from Home for the Blind, Pune and the Mamasaheb Mohol College, Pune securing first position in his Higher Secondary board examinations.

After high school, he made a decision to pursue music as a career and was awarded many scholarships such as:

  • National scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India
  • Sawai Gandharva Scholarship from the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal
  • Swaranand Pratishthan Scholarship
  • Sahitya Rang Bhoomi Scholarship
  • “Promising Hindustani Musician Award” by Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel

While continuing to learn from his Guru, he also teaches Dhrupad. Currently he is a Resident Musician Scholar at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata.

He has given a number of solo and Jugalbandi recitals with his Gurubhai Prassanna Vishwanathan at various venues such as:

  • Madhukauns, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya
  • Barsi of the Late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar held in Mumbai
  • Malhar Avishkar, Pune
  • The Sawai Gandharva Scholarship Award Ceremony
  • The Swaranand Pratishthan Scholarship Award Ceremony
  • Devnandan Ubhayaker Yuva Sangeet Utsav
  • Performed with Arohi Band for Swarga Foundation, Chennai
  • Sang for the “I’m Special Calendar 2017” promo of Swarga Foundation
  • Sang for the Documentary directed by Film Director Sri Umesh Kulkarni
  • Sang for the drama “Mrityu, Ishwar, Jounota” written by thespian Bratya Basu
  • Bhakti Utsav, organised by the Delhi Government
  • Performed at London for “Dhrupad Music Society” in 2018
  • Performed for Rotary International Club at Chennai Music Academy
  • Performed at prestigious ITC-SRA Sangeet Sammelan Kolkata
  • Prestigious Tansen Festival, Gwalior
